CS Babies & Children

“After seeing Barbara work on my
son, I decided to have a session to
help my body re-balance, after my
pregnancy. It was the best thing I
could have done for myself! Not only
did it relax my body, but it reflected
in my son within 24 hours, easing
his colic and fretful state.” LC

Why is CS so beneficial for babies and children?

Craniosacral Therapy is extremely gentle and respectful to the baby, and recognises that babies are conscious and very aware. At their birth the brain is one quarter its adult size, then doubles in size in the next 12 months. Cranial bones grow and change shape to accommodate the growth rate of the brain, to protect that precious brain. Bones can only grow at the sutures, so healthy movement and nourishment of our heads and the sutures, create healthier bones for our growing children.

Initial evaluation sessions for Mum and baby are 1 hour $75.00 – Dads/partners can come free!   Follow-up sessions are:
Adults  – 1 hour $75.00
Post-natal Dads are offered one free session.
Babies & children (-14)   30 – 45 mins   $65.00
Adults and children remain fully clothed and lie on a massage table. Sometimes children are more comfortable nestled with Mum or Dad on a comfy sofa. Sessions are very relaxed and not time critical, please bring your favourite toys and books for babies and  children. Breastfeeding is encouraged to relax and comfort Mum and baby.

Pregnancy, birth and post-natal
From conception to birth, the miracle of creating new human life unfolds. Your body naturally prepares for labour and birth – physically, mentally and emotionally. In the womb, baby prepares too.
CranioSacral Therapy can assist alignment of the birth canal, and ease restrictive pain in spine, pelvis and cramped organs.  Your concerns or fears around birthing can be released from stressed muscles, resourcing you and your baby for the true joy of the birth experience.
During birth a baby naturally withstands each contraction, the membranes and small plates of soft cartilage (not yet bone) in the head, neck and pelvis moving to accommodate the pressure. In some births, forceps or ventouse suction can pressure the bones while ceasarian can cause sudden de-pressurisation shock. Epidural (spinal anaesthestic) may cause floppiness or lethargy for baby and Mum.
Once the baby is born the membranes and bones reshape themselves – even with the easiest of births the membranes can be restricted, setting the mold for future  growing bones. It is valuable to have a CranioSacral evaluation for Baby and Mum, before and after the birth.
After the birth, Mum can benefit from gentle rebalancing of the pelvis and spine, assisting the muscles to realign, releasing the ‘cell memory’ of anaesthetic or other procedures. This can help you both to bond, relax and blossom.

“My 18 month old slept through the
night for the first time after only one
session.”  SC, Wellington

The effects of CranioSacral Therapy with babies, children and parents are the most rewarding to experience.
Conditions that respond well include:
●  Feeding difficulties, continual reflux and prolonged colic – can aid restriction in the Vagus nerve, chest, the diaphragm and digestive organs
●  Sleeping difficulties – can soothe babies who cry for abnormally long periods – they often have ‘headaches’ they are unable to tell us about
●  A fearful or fretful state – can ease the memory of being ‘stuck’ in long labour, a very quick delivery trauma, or umbilical and ceasarian shock. This can also express in Mum as post-natal depression, or ‘just not coping’
●  Can release restrictions that develop within the foetus that can cause lazy eye or squint
●  Neck torsions – can unwind compression caused by jamming of the skull in utero, or at birth
●  Repeat ear/throat infections, – assists better drainage and builds vitality for  the head, neck, throat and chest
●  A feeling that baby ‘has not arrived’
●  Pre-term babies especially respond to very gentle CranioSacral Therapy as tissues/bones blossom to ‘catch-up’ and intervention shock is released

“I learnt how my body has held onto
‘tension patterns’ since my own birth
and by releasing these, it has helped
my baby to release her own.”

Many childhood difficulties can be attributed to restrictions in the CranioSacral system as a result of birth. The full impact may not be evident until much later, expressed as a learning disability or a behavioural condition. Children of all ages can be assisted, as the original restriction is ‘remembered’ in the tissue -field of our bodies:
●  Glue ear, sinus congestion
●  Teething difficulties
●  Asthma, bronchitis, breathing
●  Tantrums, hyperactivity and behavioural disorders
●  Getting stuck before/during a growth spurt, ‘out of sorts’ or ‘clingy’
●  Autism can result from direct compression of the brain from cranial bones or restricted drainage
●  Cerebral palsy – the whole cranium may be out of shape internally, caused by the birth process as it impacts on a membrane system that may have grown in a restricted way in the womb
●  Meningitis is an infection of the meninges or membranes. When the meningitis infection has receded it leaves scars in the membranes causing tightness and restriction
●  Epilepsy can be caused by compression of the cranium from birth, an accident, or from scarring left in the membranes after meningitis.

“We value Barbara’s cheerful skillfulness for our whole family. Her insight has guided us into understanding the impact of trauma on our bodies. We have been most impressed by her ability to not only honour our experience, but also to connect with our children and adolescents.”

CranioSacral Therapy Sessions for the whole family
I view the holistic birth process as a ‘family event’ – supporting Dads/partners, families and caregivers too.  CranioSacral therapy listens to the emotional shifts as the whole extended family adjusts to a new baby and lifestyle.
After a CranioSacral evaluation, an individual treatment plan is tailored for baby, Mum and Dads/partners or the caregivers.
Two treatments are advised initially and then re-assessed.
